Digital Marketing

Can you feel that? That's the feeling you get when you've just found your new Digital Marketing Company.

So, you have a snazzy new website. It looks great. The copy reads beautifully. You couldn’t be happier… Except, it’s barely getting any visits at all. That’s where a Digital Marketing Company comes in.

Digital marketing is an umbrella term for the means you use to market your company, online.

As society delves ever deeper into digital, one thing becomes clear: there’s no going back.

In fact, 93% of online experiences begin with a search engine (Data from bluecorona.com)

If you don’t get serious about digital marketing, you risk being left behind.

Inbound vs Outbound: let the battle begin.

To bring the fundamental difference into focus, it helps to consider this analogy: outbound is a megaphone and inbound is a magnet.

Outbound Marketing used to be pretty much the only way to go… Used to be.

It’s the megaphone in the example and involves broadcasting your message to your audience.

It’s radio advertising, billboards, TV ads, online banner ads, telemarketing etc.…

Nowadays it just doesn’t make as much sense as it used it.

With so much advertising clutter, the public has developed a severe case of banner blindness.

That’s to say that they switch off at the sight of traditional advertising.

In fact, in 2018, online banner ads are only clicked by a staggeringly meagre 0.1% of people who see them.

Outdoor Billboards are extremely expensive, and the truth is, they don’t work very well anymore.

Consider this: passengers in cars aren’t really looking at the road much anymore.

They’re looking at their smartphones.

And drivers are – well – driving…

Couple that with fierce competition and advertising clutter and it starts to paint a bleak picture for the future some of these advertising methods.

Alright, so what’s Inbound Marketing then?

Great question.

Inbound Marketing is the magnet. Its aim is to more subtly attract customers and pull them in, rather than trying to grab their focus.

Make to mistake though, when we say it’s subtle, we don’t mean ineffective. In the digital age, Inbound Marketing is extremely effective.

Okay, so how will Inbound Marketing attract new customers to my business?

Well… these days when people are looking for a new product or service, they hop right onto their computers.

And that’s just when they are near one. Otherwise they hop onto their smartphone’s on-the-go.

When your customers go looking for a product or service like yours, inbound marketing makes sure it’s your company that comes up first – not your competitors.

When you hear a Digital Marketing Company talk about digital marketing, the majority of the time, they’re referring to inbound marketing.

Types of Digital Marketing:

While the list of Digital Marketing techniques below is far from exhaustive. The ones below are what we tend to focus on for our customers.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Your Digital Marketing Company might recommend you do some SEO on your website, but what is it?

SEO stands from Search Engine Optimization. It is the process by which you get your website to appear higher in the search results on the leading search engines, like Google.

SEO is extremely important for most businesses as most people now search for products and services online. Which means if you haven’t implemented SEO, they’ll be going straight to your competitors.

SEO is typically broken down into two major components: on-page and link building.

On-page SEO is the discipline of optimizing the website itself for search engines.

It usually starts with keyword research that’s to say researching what phrases people are searching for when they search for businesses online.

The trick is to find keywords and phrases that are high in search volume, but aren’t too competitive, relative to the domain authority of your website.

*Domain Authority refers to how established your website is in its online niche.

Once your Digital Marketing Company has found the best possible keywords for your company, we then integrate them into your site.

It gets pretty technical here, but this is the point us SEO nerds start getting uptight about keyword density, meta descriptions, alt tags and more.

You don’t need to worry about this stuff, but if you’re interested, you can find some fantastic information on the subject here

Link Building, sometimes referred to as creating a backlink profile, is the process of getting other websites (in relevant niches) to link to your website.

Think about it this way. The biggest companies in the world will have a ton of links pointing to them on the internet.

Search Engines analyze the links pointing to your site to determine how credible it is.

Some websites have hundreds of thousands or even millions of links pointing to them. To Google, that’s a sign that those websites are extremely important in their industry.

But it’s not just the volume of links that’s important. It’s the quality of the links. Links from authority websites relevant to your niche will obviously help your SEO immensely.

On the other hand, spammy, irrelevant links can actually harm your websites rankings. That’s why buying links is a bad idea.

Content Marketing

In the previous section we discussed SEO and keyword research. One of the best ways to use your snazzy new keywords is in your content.

Content marketing is the art of creating valuable content on your website.

But, who should the content be valuable for? That’s right your customers.

By sharing expert advice related to your industry on your website, you not only give your customers a reason to visit your website, you position yourself as an expert in your niche.

Content doesn’t just have to be a blog. Think podcasts, webinars, video content.

If your company sells garden equipment, create content like: “The 7 Best Garden Trends of 2019 to Make Your Neighbours Jealous.

We create killer content for a number of companies. If you’d like us to create yours, give us a holler.

PPC (Pay Per Click)

SEO is a long-term strategy, so while you await all that SEO traffic, why not kick-start it all with some PPC.

Pay Per Click or PPC is a form of online advertising where your advert appears as a sponsored search result.

It appears above the other search results (see below) and you only pay when someone clicks on your advert.

Like SEO you do keyword research based on search volume and keyword difficulty, although keyword difficulty in PPC is different from organic search.

How much you pay per click is dependent on the keyword. Competitive keywords are more expensive and are driven by competition.

Once a good keyword is identified you can set an overall budget for it.

What makes PPC so effective is purchase intention.

In other words, if you run an artisanal pet food store and you target a keyphrase like: “Artisanal pet food Cape Town”, there’s a high chance that the person typing that phrase into Google will purchase.

They are not just random members of the public. They’re pre-qualified.

Email Marketing

You might ask us if we’re crazy for doing email marketing. And with all the unscrupulous spammers out there, it would be a good question.

But the answer is no. The truth is it’s crazy NOT to be doing email marketing.

Picture the following situation: someone lands on your website, they’re pretty interested but not entirely ready to pull the trigger.

So they leave.

They might have been 90% of the way there, but now they’ll probably never visit your website again.

If you had been able to capture their email address, you could have continued to woo them. You could have made the sale and even turned them into a long-term customer.

But now they’re gone for good.

Of course, you don’t want to be spammy. It will only hurt your own company.

You also don’t want to bother people who haven’t opted it (we all know how annoying that is)

Like content marketing, you should be providing content that’s cool and interesting to people. That way it’s not a bother.

Your Digital Marketing Company will also be able to assist you with coming up with creative ways to capture email addresses.

You can’t just tell someone to give you their information, you have to provide something in return.

To use the gardening company example again, you might want to offer a free e-book on gardening in return.

Or maybe a coupon code.

But once you have their details, you can be the top-of-mind company for that person for months and years to come.

Wrapping it up.

Digital Marketing has never been more important than it is now, in 2019. And that trend is only set to continue.
